Nicki Anderson Discusses
The Evolution of Personal Training - Show #112

codebase="http://activex.microsoft.com/activex/controls/mplayer/en/nsmp2inf.cab#Version=6,0,02,902"
standby="Loading Microsoft Windows Media Player..." type="application/x-oleobject">

Nicki Anderson of Reality Fitness (www.realityfitness.com) spent the last 25 years trying to shift the way people view diet and exercise.

Nicki believes that exercise has become punishment for an imperfect body. It seems that exercise is perceived to be for the elite athlete or thin person. As a fitness professional, she feels that it is her responsibility to introduce exercise as something that is positive and life enhancing. More often than not people view exercise and sound nutrition as an all or nothing proposition.

Nicki Anderson, IDEA Master Trainer is the author of "Reality Fitness; Inspiration for Your Health and Well-being". She is the health and fitness columnist for Suburban Chicago Newspapers as well as a family fitness contributor for eDiets. She is a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). Nicki sits on the IHRSA Entrepreneurial Advisory Board, the Personal Training Committee for IDEA and USA Today’s Entrepreneurial Advisory Board.

Nicki speaks all over the country, teaching other health and fitness professionals about the value of customer service, an art she feels has been overlooked far too long by the health and fitness industry. Nicki says, “If we are to inspire others to become fit, we have to present the opportunity as an equal opportunity endeavor!”

“Often times we turn away the exact people that we need to attract. Health clubs can be intimidating and that is why I’ve created an environment that is conducive to all levels of fitness, either the athlete in training or the senior citizen seeking proper strength training advice.”

In addition to her industry seminars, Nicki also presents seminars to corporations and various groups seeking practical health and fitness advice. As an avid voice against fad-diets and overzealous exercise programs, her seminars have garnered rave reviews. Her humor and passion about health and wellness help to create seminars that leave people wanting more!

Joy answered the following questions:

What are some of the most important legal issues for a fitness professional who wants to produce an informational product such as a book or DVD?

The subtitle of your book is “clearing copyrights, trademarks and other rights for entertainment and media productions”. What does it mean to “clear rights”?

How can fitness professionals obtain copyright protection for their books, videos, and DVD’s?

What steps does a producer need to take before using music in a DVD or video production?

The process of music licensing sounds complicated. Are there any easy methods for a video producer to obtain good music at an affordable price?

When does a DVD producer need a location release?

Should a fitness professional use a contract when retaining a ghostwriter, co-producer, or other collaborator for development of an informational product?

Let’s say a fitness professional wants to use case studies, personal stories, or images of clients in a book or DVD about diet or personal training. Does the fitness professional need to get the clients’ permission?

Are there other situations in which a fitness professional needs to get a release from people involved with the information product?

What other steps can a fitness professional take to reduce the risk of legal problems with an informational product?
